Overview of the AGENT framework (4 minutes)
The AGENT Framework is a simple, memorable, five-step process that guides you from the moment you notice tension all the way to building clear, lasting agreements. It’s your compass for handling conflict with clarity, courage, and creativity.
As originally presented in my TEDx talk:
AGENT stands for Awareness, Ground, Empathize, Negotiate, and Tie it all up
It helps you recognize conflict, prepare yourself, understand the other person’s needs, brainstorm solutions, and create an agreement everyone understands.
In this module, you’ll learn how each step works and why the sequence matters. You’ll see how these five moves turn conflict from something to fear into something to use—a signal of unmet needs, misaligned assumptions, or deeper values wanting to be seen.
Conflict isn’t the problem. Avoiding it is… With the AGENT framework, you don’t just solve problems. You strengthen relationships.
And you’ll see why the framework is so powerful:
When you're Aware, you stop reacting on autopilot.
When you Ground yourself, you clarify what actually matters.
When you Empathize, you unlock insight and trust.
When you Negotiate, you get creative instead of combative.
When you Tie it all up, you protect the agreement—and the relationship.
This module will walk you, step by step, through each part of the framework, drawing on real examples—including conflicts between parents and kids, managers and employees, and partners planning their lives together. You’ll see how people move from frustration to breakthrough simply by following the AGENT roadmap.
By the end of this module, you won’t just understand the AGENT framework—you’ll be able to use it. Conflicts that once felt draining or intimidating will start to look like opportunities to collaborate, learn, and grow.
Let’s begin your journey toward becoming a confident, compassionate, and creative Negotiating AGENT.
